Panel Discussion on Power-Hungry AI: Sustainable Paths Toward More Artificial Intelligence - Wednesday, April 8, 20:30
Artificial intelligence - AI for short - is already omnipresent in our daily lives. It will fundamentally shape nearly every area of how we live. Yet this technological achievement comes at an enormous cost: data centers for artificial intelligence are gigantic energy consumers. Not only does training AI systems on new data require vast amounts of energy - we as AI users also contribute immensely to this power consumption through our ever-increasing usage. One thing is already clear: AI's energy demand is rising rapidly and is unlikely to be met by renewable energy sources alone. In the United States, new nuclear power plants have therefore been planned to cover future electricity needs. We face a dilemma: do we continue to pursue technological progress unchecked, regardless of the high energy consumption, or do we find sustainable ways to develop and use AI responsibly, in order to protect our planet? And how does this dilemma influence the world of art?
Prof. Dr. Marius Lindauer, AI researcher, and media artists Christiane Kühl and Chris Kondek offer fascinating insights into their findings and perspectives. They discuss, among other things, how sustainability considerations can be integrated directly into AI as a key technology, and what role we as users can play in making AI more sustainable.
