Our UN SDG Contributions

The Institute of Artificial Intelligence at Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) aims to actively support the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda through its research, teaching, and community engagement. AI research carries responsibility: at LUH|AI we develop trustworthy, fair, and human-centred AI with measurable impact, both locally and globally.

Goal 3: Good Health and Well Being - With our CAIMed Center (Lower Saxony Center for AI & Causal Methods in Medicine) we contribute to the next generation of medical diagnostics.

Goal 4: Quality Education - The Leibniz AI Academy is the first micro degree program on AI at German Universities, both open to students and externals. With our MOOCs on AI, we share our learning material world wide with people from more than a 100 countries. Moreover, in collaboration with education researchers from Hannover and beyond, we have been actively doing research on computational writing assistance methods, such as essay assessment and feedback generation, among others, in the DFG project ArgSchool.

Goal 5: Gender Equality - The AG Diversity (with substantial contributions from LUH|AI) provides activities on promoting diversity in computer science and electronic engineering, incl. mentoring, events and a weekly FINTA room. Beyond that, one of our ongoing research lines is the detection and mitigation of gender bias in language and its representation.

Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy - In collaboration with Prof. Richard Hanke-Rauschenbach and his team, we contribute to more efficient and sustainable energy systems.

Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure - In collaboration with Prof. Berend Denkena and Prof. Thomas Seel, we work on efficient and sustainable AI-solutions for industrial partners.

Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities - A core research topic of the institute is the computational study of social bias in language and its representation, including its quantification, detection, and mitigation. The goal is to achieve fairer treatment of people across countries and societies.

Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities - Our research on computational argumentation includes methods to support deliberative democracy, to foster equal participation in communities.

Goal 13: Climate Action - Green AutoML addresses both the energy-consumption of AI and the application of AI to sustainability projects, incl more efficient mobility or satellite earth observation.

Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions - In multiple DFG projects including the transregional collaborative research center TRR 318 (Constructing Explainability), we have been doing extensive research on computational  methods on argumentation and explanation in order to foster self-determined opinion information, AI literacy, and more.
